Maximum power lets you know how much power (measured in watts) a speaker can handle. If you have a low-power system, your speakers don’t need to handle a lot of power. On the other hand, a system with powerful external amplifiers will require speakers whose maximum power is close to the output of the amplifiers.

Important Note: The main specification for power handling is RMS maximum power, not peak power. RMS ratings realistically measure how much power the speaker can handle continuously, not just for a short period of time. A speaker with a rating of “up to 50 watts RMS” will be better suited for your low-power stereo than one with a rating of “10-80 watts RMS”.

What does this mean for you? If you’re using a factory system for power, look for new speakers with low RMS power and a sensitivity of 90 dB or higher.

If you’re only using an aftermarket stereo, look for speakers with a maximum power output of 75 watts RMS.

If you are using an aftermarket amplifier for power, you must match the RMS power to the specifications provided in your amplifier’s manual.

If you’re just looking for something better than the factory sound in a vehicle you intend to change in a few years, entry-level to mid-range speakers are a solid option.

If you plan on maintaining your car for a while and possibly building a system over time, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a set of premium speakers.
